Another day, another evening w/ whom else, my lovely e39.

Today I am fixing the auxillary fan on my 1996 528i e39, by replacing the aux fan resistors with a kit that is way less epxensive than buying a complete new aux fan. The following pics will hopefully tell the story of the DIY:

That's it for tonight folks. Hope this writeup w/ pics helps anyone out there on RF contemplating fixing their auxillary fan w/ the resistor repair kit (remember to do Jim Cash's excellent tips--search function works--about testing exactly what's wrong with your aux fan).
From 2001-2003 a different and much harder procedure is needed.

A fellow BMW owner (Vince) wrote this several years back, but with few photos:
Replacing broken headlamp adjusters ...

Although his descriptions were spot-on, I decided to redo it with with a "lot" more pictures to make it more clear to follow - so to be clear, my goal is to make his procedure clearer - kudos to him for figuring this out and putting the document together.

In addition, since after 8-9 years the actual headlight covers/lenses were blurry, I decided to install new DEPO covers with the European-style clear turn signals at the same time, which takes no extra time since you have to remove the originals anyway - why not put new ones for just $99 for the pair?

So the adjusters were broken. How can I tell? Besides the lights pointing down and being downright dangerous and almost useless at night, I had no effect by turning either adjuster (side to side or top/down). Now, the lenses: this is how they look before the “operation”:

Here is the box with the new DEPO units:

So to remove the driver’s headlight, there are 4 screws, just like Vince points out in his excellent write-up. Two on top:

And two more screws on the bottom of the headlight assembly (one is easy to spot, the other is a tad harder to see):

To get the one that is hidden, I used my newest buddy/tool from Sears – this little magnet is rated to lift up to 5 pounds, and it has an LED at the end which you can turn on/off when you need it!:

OK, enough with the tool porn. Once you get the 4 screws out, you can slide the assembly out, but don’t pull out completely yet as you have 4 connectors to remove (high beam, low beam, turn signal, and the servo/control for the adjustable feature in my car):

Here are the 4 connectors:

And here is the part that we have to open and repair. Note that since I am replacing the lens I just have it on the ground. If you are re-using the lens, put the assembly on some soft cloth or similar to prevent “new” scratches:

Here is the new lens for the driver’s side just below the original assembly:

OK, now to remove the original lens. Start by gently pulling of the top tabs:

Now, note that the other one was actually “welded” in place – they melted the plastic on purpose!:

There are a few more on each side, and on the bottom, and then the lens/covers is free:

Note that the actual glass lenses on the old assembly were dark/dirty/whatever – the following photo shows the new ones. Which one should I put back in my car?:

Remove the connector for the HID and the high beam bulb:

Then remove both of the rubber seals:

Now comes the scary part. You have to simply pull up at the metal piece holding the reflectors in order to access the broken adjusters. Pull hard, and pull straight up while holding the outer part of the housing – only the servo is holding it together at this point (note also that the HID lens is dirty!):

Normally the high and low beams are held in place by 3 points: one from the servo adjuster, and two from the actual adjusters. Since both adjusters were broken, this is the adjuster servo that was keeping things together:

OK, now on with the problematic adjusters. You can see here that both are broken:

Of course each of these adjusters has a ball and a corresponding socket. Here is the socket for the servo adjuster:

Here is one of the balls, broken inside the socket:

And same with the other one:

These are the new parts. Note that the white one was the older material, and that they are now pink, which is OK with me since only real men are comfortable wearing pink!

The problem with these adjusters is not only that they are broken – they are completely brittle. As soon as you touch it, it disintegrates!. So to remove the broken heads inside the socket, pulling them out was not an option. For the first one, I started by removing the holder:

I then drill a small hole from the opposite side and was able to break the remaining piece into smaller pieces and finally out of the socket:

For the other one, I was lucky in that it has a big hole on the opposite side of the ball/socket, so I just found something of the “right” diameter to “persuade” the broken piece of plastic out:

With the broken heads/balls out of the sockets, now we can remove the main body of each of the broken adjusters:

Once you get them both out, you are just looking at the long screws:

You can then start screwing the new adjusters in place. I went ahead and used synthetic grease to lightly coat the friction surfaces, all three sockets, and the screw, which greatly improved fitting the new pieces in, and adjusting the beams once everything was completed:

I did not like how the “hex” adjuster worked, so I cut them off – it is now much easier to adjust the beams just using the single, large knob:

Just like Vince stated, screw the adjusters all the way down. Then comes the scary part again, but this time, you have to press down the reflector assembly into all 3 of the heads. The one for the servo was somewhat easier, but the two for the adjusters were thought, even with the grease in place. Remember that the adjusters are plastic, you can break them again here in this step if you are not careful:

Once in place, you are done with the new adjusters. You can now re-assemble the lens (or better yet, install your new, clear DEPO pieces like I did). Of course, I did clean the HID lens first – it looked much better after this!:

Another close-up of the old and new cover/lens:

Start by removing the color trim from the old cover/lens, since you will need it for the new cover/lens. It is held in place at 3 places:

You then also have to remove the holder for the turn signal. If you are un-lucky as I was, it was also brittle, so it broke when I removed it. After a trip to the dealer (they had “one” in stock!), I was able to finish this part:

Put back the rubber seals – be careful not to press/push too much of you can break the adapters again!. Once you have those back in place, reinstall the high beam bulb and the HID connector.

Here is the completed assembly, ready to be put back in my car:

Here on the driver’s side I have the new one, and still have the old one on the passengers’ side:

Once I turned them ON, look at how bad the old assembly looks like compared to the new one:

Then do the other side. Seriously. It took like 3 hours to do the first one, but only about 1 hour to do the other side.

Later that night, I used my wife’s 330i to set some markers on the ground and in our fence, and I used those to adjust mine:

I then drove around (since it was at night), and after I came back I did some minor tweaking. They are now perfect, but the best part is that I can now actually see at night – that alone was reason enough to call this a job well done.

Well, I hope this helps others. Thanks again to Vince for the original writeup. Total cost for both cars $90, including flame retardant wire protector for clean look and extra protection. Since is next to impossible to find 12 switched that goes to Ov while cranking, there is a cheaper DRL from same company for $26 shipped that doesn't have that extra wire.

Well, here's a little DIY writeup for our board (so you don't have to navigate to the 540i.com board for that writeup), plus I added some things that the other writeup doesn't have. Again, it is pictorial format with comments added to the pictures. All i have to say about this procedure is that they (our lovely German engineers) couldn't have designed a more tight fitting area than what they did when attempting to R&R this piece. Unless you have small (read: girlie hands), this procedure is a PIA. Here's the pics and hopefully they will tell the story:

Well, that's it. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday, gang. I'm going in to see if the wife will still talk to me, and if the kids remember who I am. Perhaps I should just stumble in the door wearing lederhosen, drunkly babbling about our vaunted Bavarian engineering.

The first is to take out two screws T10 hex type from the console.

Next you will need to take out one each Cross head screw from the bottom and one from the top!

Next thing is to simply snap the console apart. Its not that difficult.
In fact....make sure you dont pull too hard. Or drink any beer before you do it. :-)

In the next photo, simply stick something in the slot where I have my screwdriver. Then while sliding the lock towards the drviers side give the plug a slight pull and viola! Out she comes.

Read note in picture. :-)

And read the note here too.

From underneath....scratch the two devil eyes out with anything. Its only a hard plastic. Kind of like a locker to hold the screws in.

Next take a small flat tip and loosen the two screws you just uncovered. And basically that's it. That ignition comes out in your hand!

christa hendrickshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03414101502821958763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6015054100995784456.post-38722398772448433272009-08-25T04:09:00.000-07:002009-08-25T04:09:13.980-07:00E39 Moon Roof FixLook familiar? This is a typical break in our E39 moon roof. Just a crappy little sliding tab. This is how I fixed it.

This recently became my reality like so many BMW owners before me. No matter how gentle we are on our moonroof, these little sliding tabs break without provocation- disabling the tilt feature.

I am out to rectify BMW's shortcoming on this one. MDIMBLER was the most recent fellow to post about this on Roadfly, he is having to pay $104 ($52 each side) for the entire right & left control rail kits! (read about it @ http://bimmer.roadfly.com/bmw/forums/e39/9333764-1.html ) Really he, like most of us, only needed this stupid little tab. But BMW COULDN'T possibly allow you to buy a single piece could they?!

Well, I am NOT going to pay $52 per side ($85 BMW list price) for this piece of crap. The current part is made of POM (aka Acetals/polyoxymethylene). It is cousin to nylon but handles water better.

Properties include:
-Higher strength than ABS or PVC
-Tough
-Abrasion resistant
-Low water absorption

Applications include:
-Gears or mechanical parts, esp. in water
-Sliding parts

Here are my options for replacing/reproducing this part:

1) I can make a new set out of aluminum. It would be much stronger, but if the glass were pushed down on or the assembly overstressed in some other way, something else would fail- maybe something more expensive! Time to have the first completed, working part ~2-3 weeks

2) I can take the OEM tab sliders and cast them in silicone to create a negative mold. I can then make unlimited exact replications quickly by pouring in 2-part mix thermoset (non-melting) plastics to form the part out of polyurethane (PUR), epoxies (EP), polyester (UPR), or possibly nylon/polyamide (PA). Time to have the first completed, working part ~1 week

3) Design and mill out an injection molding die. We have 3 or 4 injection molding machines for low volume projects here on campus, so I could use any of those. This would allow me to inject virtually any thermoplastic (melting plastic) into the mold. This is the least attractive option to me because designing and machining a mold takes lots of effort. But, if I knew it would be worth my while, I could sink the time into it and make several while I still have the means. Time to first completed, working part ~2-4 months

Here are more pictures to add to the nostalgia...
I am very pleased with the result. The precision machining paid off as there was not a single snag in the reinstallation. Everything fits and functions properly.

I've decided, in response to some concerns raised in having aluminum and steel together, to monitor the wear on the tracks. I took photos on the current track condition so I can have empirical evidence as I make my judgments. But given the relative low motion (1-5 oscillations/day) and stresses on these mating surfaces, I will wager that this part and the track will outlast the car.

Here it is, good alternative to $104 for the guide rail kits?
All done machining. Two revisions next to the OEM sliding tab.

I took some time with the polishing wheel to smooth the mating surfaces. That should minimize abrasion.

I really do like having the tilt feature. I have it popped most of the time in the summer to cool the interior in the sun even with the windows shut to stifle any unexpected rainstorms. It is just a poor design on BMW's part. Admittedly, I broke these pieces by sliding the shade forward too quickly (I thought the roof was closed) and *SNAP* there they went. Pretty lame if you ask me. My roof may break again, but not these pieces!

I got a hold of mdimbler's Bentley manual to get the switch out so I could inspect it. While helpful, the Bentley covered an earlier model of the switch that merely clips in. Mine required removing the entire steering wheel, four screws, a few wiring harnesses, and THEN 2 clips. No biggie, the Bentley manual got my wheel off for me (it's an amazing, magical piece of literature.) I'm gonna start into a bunch of photos of the real problem and how it was fixed.

Here is the switch in the steering switch assembly. I already pulled off the tilt-wheel switch, it is lying in the car:

Inside the top part of the switch. I cracked the switch open to see if I could spot any trouble areas. It is a complex little device, so I was careful not to take apart what I couldn't figure out. This little tab you see here that I depress is the canceling mechanism. It was sticking, so I thought it needed a little lube in there to free it up.

Turns out it was this little broken pin (someone pushing forward on the stick too aggressively while turning the brights on- probably me) that was letting the cancel mechanism get pinched in the housing and not catch properly. You can see where the pin SHOULD have been.

I thought, "Well poop, I don't think I can work with anything this small..." I knew super glue alone wouldn't hold it for long. Then I started thinking of bracing it with a small screw. I thought eyeglasses first, but I couldn't just well pull a screw out of my spectacles now could I? But I did snag an old, snazzy pair of my wife's sunglasses to steal a screw. Luckily they were too long- she would have been mad ;). I ended up using 1 of 2 suitable screws from an RC heli I fly. This screw just held on the cockpit bubble, no biggie. See the size next to a micro Phillips screwdriver.

I drilled out a hole with my smallest drill bit- 1/16th", filed down the injection molded ribs with the Dremel, and screwed the pin back on. I was thinking of also using super glue, but it holds very well with the screw, and I didn't want the glue to cure before I got the pin screwed on straight.

I took a short drive after the install, taking as many right turns as possible. Fixing that pin made all the difference in the functionality of this switch. It was highly annoying to have to cancel right turn blinks myself.
Friday I was really Jone's-ing for a project, but it was late and I was poor. So I decided to finally tackle the front speakers. I wanted to find out if it was feasible to add 6.5" drivers up front. Why 6.5" drivers you say? Well, because they sound better than 5.25" and furthermore, they were the Infinity coaxial set that I had on my Chevy- so I was driven to make this pair fit.

I took the first step and pulled the door apart per the bmw tips.com instructions- easy enough. With the new, larger driver in hand I sized of the clearance and saw that there was not much to be had. BMW designed these panels very tight. I was going to get rid of the stock enclosure completely to make more room, but then I would lose the resonance of the sealed enclosure and have lots of issues with mounting the new drivers. So I removed the weak ol' 5" woofers and tried to make the 6.5" drivers fit.

Well, no surprise, as seen in the size difference, it wasn't just going to 'slip in.' I was going to grind down the high spots (of which there are many) of the enclosure with a Dremel so the new driver could seat flush. That would have been fine, but then there would be gaping holes to fill for proper sealed resonance, so I tried to think laterally.

I have used heat guns before and it so happened that I have access to a couple at the university, so I swung by there @ about 12:30 am Saturday morning and tried not to set off any alarms. The heat gun did the job. It took about an hour per enclosure, but I slowly MELTED and reformed the plastic, trying to make it as flush as possible. This was no simple task. I was tempted to put it in the oven to make the whole thing more ductile, but I didn't want to pull out a soft, sagging mass of ruined plastic. This wasn't pretty, but it made room for the bigger basket.
The Infinity sits pretty flush, so I'm happy. But there are still lots of air gaps, so I used lots of weather stripping to seal it off. Luckily, I was able to use the factory wiring w/o a hitch.

I was pretty worried after all this work that the driver was not going to allow the door panel to go back on properly. Since everything was larger and the unit protruded more than the old woofer, I thought I was going to have to modify the door panel also. Luckily though, everything went back together as before (I consider that a freebie :). I think the fact that the tweeter pokes out so much was actually a blessing in that is probably pushes the grill away so the woofer cone and rubber surround isn't slapping the grill during hard hits. As you can see it fits and I can tell you things aren't slapping together while driving :).

Now you KNOW I couldn't add these sweet drivers and just power them with that nasty old factory amp, right? NO WAY! I just spliced in the remaining 2 channels on my 4-channel 1000w (claimed) Profile California 1040 amp.

This system SCREAMS! I enjoyed it in my Chevy, but it just sounds so much better in the 540. I still have the factory amp, mids, and tweets going in tandem with the new system- making 16 working speakers. In reality, I don't know how much good the factory system is doing. I am still going to play around with it and see I can't balance the 2 systems and get some quality out of it, but I am skeptical given the low performance of the factory amp. This was a fun install and it was rewarding to see it work.christa hendrickshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03414101502821958763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6015054100995784456.post-84779133666754923192009-08-25T03:53:00.000-07:002009-08-25T03:53:57.603-07:00Angel Eyes DIY Mod E39

Old, yellow 10w Halogen angel eye lamps. One is out and shining at you.

I took out my D-cell flashlight and made a comparison. About the same output.

Then I tested it against my 8-LED flashlight. Brighter than the flashlight, but the LEDs are more the color I want.

Then I stuck the flashlight right into the headlight housing in the lamp position to see how it looked. I like it already. Though not properly focused, dim, and only a flashlight, I like the color a ton more. If my project doesn't go well I am just going to have to tape 2 of these flashlights in and pop my hood every time I drive to turn them on and off!

Next step is to get some high output LEDs and make a housing to fit. I think for the prototype I am just going to pull out the halogen and insert an LED (with resistor) for proof of concept. Then a better housing can be fabricated.

Wish me luck!
Take a look.

This is a split nut with an integrated handle. Since only the brass nut on the nitrous line failed I really only needed to replace the brass nut. So I modeled this little gadget and cut it out. Now I don't need a wrench every time I want to fill my bottle.
I used superglue to hold it together, but that didn't last. A quick visit to the machine shop made things more stable.
Joe M suggested an elaborate LED setup. This got me thinking about these scrolling LED belt buckles and name tags you see at disco clubs and Tokyo. So, I researched it out a bit and bought one hoping it would work.

Recipe:
E39 BMW
Common handtools
Rachet set
Scrolling LED License Plate Frame

2 hours working time

The frame I bought is a Flash Frames brand. It was the cheapest and most prolific model on eBay. There is also E-Frames, Roadmaster, and other brands with different features. My model boasts 5 message @120 character storage capacity, wireless remote, and a $20 price tag- shipping included. Got it in the mail yesterday; did the project late tonight.

Let's get started...

Get your package and beautiful 8 month pregnant wife to open it -I love her.

On my model, the LED assembly just pops right out of the frame. They are so tight, they aren't going anywhere. Brown is ground. Black/yellow is 12v + switched. The only downer of this project is that the LCM doesn't at all like the fact that I pulled the filament bulb and replaced it with a 500 ma LED module. It kept cycling on and off trying to establish resistance, so the message would start then restart and so on never getting through all the way. So, reluctantly, I have the filament bulb also in right now. I plan to get a red bulb (since my red lens is gone) and insert it behind the message board in it's normal place to give the needed resistance and backlight the LED module in a cool way. I had to find an adequate ground trigger for the 528T trigger (black/white striped wire). After 45 min or more poking around with a digital multimeter, I found this little beauty: there is a ribbon cable coming out of the shift position sensor to the right of the shifter. This sensor sends ground signals that activate each light on the shift cover plate. I found that the 3rd wire in from the rear side of the ribbon sends a ground signal to activate the reverse light on the shift cover plate. I spliced the pulse relay trigger (black/white striped) into this one. I chose the reverse position so that when I shift from drive or even neutral up through reverse to park, the pulse relay would be triggered and I would be free from my car!

Tucking the wires away. Take care that they don't get pinched by the pivoting shifter at any time or you might have a spark and fire beneath your armrest!

The unit fits just barely here.

And you are ready to roll- able to spring free from your leather covered prison at a moment's notice.christa hendrickshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03414101502821958763noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6015054100995784456.post-72045833449874458662009-06-30T22:43:00.001-07:002009-06-30T23:36:36.515-07:00Remote Bottle OpenerI finally got my bottle opener fabricated, assembled, and installed. Me too. Too timid to pay $500+ for a BSW stage 1 bolt on sound system? Me two. Shy about cutting massive irreversible holes in your rear deck? Me to.

How would you feel about a reversible, noninvasive bolt-on sound system upgrade that will work in tandem with your factory system? Me dos ; )

Here is my solution to the weak, WEAK BMW factory sound. This setup was custom designed and fabricated for my 2001 540i. I do not have the premium sound or DSP package -just the regular ol' 10 speaker surround. Nor do I have fold down seats or electric rear shade.

I have already made a set for myself and now also JimC in San Diego (forum friend on Roadfly.com) who wanted a set. Email me @ Ranh316@gmail.com for you own set!

Take a peek it my pics:

Here are the fatty stock "woofers." Their sealed enclosure is just massive. Plenty of room to replace with something better. (And my wife's foot. Like PJ's?)

For some beefy sound, I opted to install these hearty Infinity Reference 9623i series 6x9" three-way 4 ohm nominal speakers. I boosted them with an additional amp but acceptable sound could be wired in right from your factory amp. The cardboard cutout is what I used to fashion plates for rigid attachment.

Here is the heart of my mod: two 1/8" thick aluminum plates to hold the speakers. I learned lots of important principals about writing that will help me throughout my life. Although there are some ideals I wish I could have learned but didn’t, I still feel that this class was well worth my time as I learned a great depth more about writing than I had before known.

I feel that I could have better learned grammar skills. Going into this class I did anticipate learning grammar skills as part of the regular curriculum. I was quite surprised to be graded for expert level grammar skills without being explicitly taught the principles in class. Grammar is not a weak point for me because most of it makes sense, but little nuances prevent me from making more lucid, concise arguments.

One good thing I did learn was how to properly cite sources in our research paper. I have written several papers over the years, each with weak citations and likely high amounts of accidental plagiarism. Now I can effectively take an idea from another source and legally incorporate it into my own work.

Also with this research paper I learned a better way to commence the research process. Now I know that it is better to go into a research attempt without heavily preconceived notions, but rather to let the research dictate what my argument will be. This allows the paper to be more accurate and truthful because I didn’t throw out sources that didn’t agree with my previous notion.

I do feel that I learned some valuable things about the writing process. For example, the structure and form of my thesis statements have much improved. Now I can write concise directives for my paper that maintain to be interesting. Also, since we had the discussion about conclusions, I feel much better about writing them. Before, conclusions have always been confusing and difficult for me. Now I know about many techniques to bring a paper to a close.

With the peer reviews and teacher reviews of our work, I have learned how to improve my writings skills. I do not feel that I was a bad writer before, but to have 4-6 different people look at my work and offer suggestions has been beneficial. I am able to see patterns in my writing that are strengths and weaknesses. Also, when others read my work, some are confused by ideas that I thought to be clear. If this is intimated to me, I will be able to revise the idea to be more concise, descriptive, and strong.

Hopefully in my future writing ventures, I will be able to incorporate the things that I have learned in this class. I realize that even in the very technical field in which I will be employed, it will be necessary to effectively communicate ideas to others with which I associate. In the next couple of semesters I will be taking a follow-up course for technical writing which focuses more on technical aspects. I do realize, however, that without the general ideas to be gleaned from a first-year writing class I would not have the foundation necessary to be able to effectively discuss technical things in writing.
christa hendrickshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03414101502821958763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6015054100995784456.post-60200512802715197732008-03-26T12:43:00.000-07:002008-03-26T12:45:06.661-07:00Ironic Levity
“If you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise they’ll kill you.”

-<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; font-size: 7pt; line-height: normal; font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal;"> Oscar Wilde

What a funny statement of itself –ironic I think. Here Wilde attempts to teach us a simple truth by making us laugh. Surely, however, one would not be martyred for telling a true statement devoid of levity; however, dislike and unpopularity would surround the persistent truth teller.

Wilde’s statement has a couple of important points to it. First, “If you want to tell people the truth…” I have spent a good portion of my life fibbing to people –no lie. I find it entertaining to mess with people. Often, when asked a simple question like, “Where did you get those new shoes?” I might quickly reply, “Oh, I stole them from the store.” I find that I do this more with unnecessary questions.

I have a field day with this when in company of my mother in law. She is always asking questions; namely questions I don’t feel are relevant to anything at all or just to prompt small-talk. To entertain myself I’ll just lie in response to her question. My responses, as shown above, are often so ridiculous and shocking that the untruth is easily spotted, but it keeps me happy and humorous.

The second piece of Wilde’s statement is for the truth tellers out there. There have been times when I feel that someone’s actions are outside of social acceptability. I had this companion (isn’t that how the best stories begin?) who was less than moderate in many of his ideals. I recall a “Bible bash” he had with some random dude on the streets of Sunnyvale, California. As we were riding away, this Elder said, “I’m going to add that guy to my list of people to dust my feet off against!” How absurd. To keep myself from going crazy, I had to say something. So at this time I developed an interesting way to offer correction without being killed by this kid.

As I learned about this Elder’s life, I found that he had had a rough time. All through high school he was ridiculed heavily for being a member of the church. He was used to this opposition and readily accepted a fight. So for me to oppose or ridicule his behavior was wholly ineffective. So, I would just make him laugh while I got my point across by going to the extreme with his ideas. For example, he once said, “I hate gays and liberals,” I replied, “Yeah, we should petition the government for a mass genocide.” He would laugh and realize how extreme he was being and chill out. By proud report, he named me his 2nd favorite companion.

I suppose that there is a third point here made by Wilde. He intimates that if one can make a person laugh while telling the truth, one will not be killed by that person. Is this a truth we can rely on? According to the audio series, “Joseph Smith: Lessons and Insights” by Mark L. McConkie, the prophet was quite the funny man. Even the Prophet himself, in his own account, admits to being “guilty of levity” (Joseph Smith –History 1:28). What became of Joseph?
christa hendrickshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03414101502821958763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6015054100995784456.post-30373719090040496512008-03-22T19:26:00.000-07:002008-03-22T19:27:34.425-07:00Researched
I have accomplished a few good bits of research for my Research Paper. I have found a few digital sources online through the HBLL as well as 2 books so far for my topic, effects of petroleum and natural gas on the environment.

The first book is Drilling Discharges in the Marine Environment. This book is very straight forward in its approach to explain studies on the waste of offshore oil rigs. The preface contains an “Origin of the Study” which states (much like a thesis), “A variety of wastes are generated in drilling oil and gas wells, including drill cuttings and used drilling fluids. The disposal of these wastes is licensed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) (40 CFR 122-125). Permitting such discharges on the outer continental shelf (OCS) has occasioned considerable public debate about how much they may harm the marine environment.”

The book is written in the form of a report. It is about 180 pages in length. As for the effects of drilling on marine pollution I think this book will be my strongest resource. One drawback is the age of the book. Written in 1983, this has likely become an old issue. However, I am aware that these rigs still dump waste into the ocean, posing the same threats as before.

The second book I have is called Response of Marine Animals to Petroleum and Specific Petroleum Hydrocarbons. This book covers, a little more indirectly, the effects of oil drilling on marine life. This text shows the effects of accidental oil spills and oil leaks from boats or drill rigs. The preface contains this statement giving light on the content of this book, “From these investigations has come the increased realization that deleterious impacts of oil on the marine ecosystem may persist long after the visible oil pollution has been cleaned up or washed away.”

This book is written in response to studies and reflects this in its style. It is also about 180 pages long. As for content, it will be a support to the assertions made in the book mentioned above. This book is also older -1981. I have actually had some difficulty finding recent publications on this topic.

One compelling online source offers a downloadable PDF titled Statistical Analyses Supporting Final Effluent Limitations Guidelines and Standards for Synthetic-Based Drilling Fluids and other Non-Aqueous Drilling Fluids in the Oil and Gas Extraction Point Source Category composed by the EPA. This is also about 180 pages of information.

At this point my thesis statement will likely resemble the following: “Due to the destructive nature of natural gas and petroleum exploration installation, operation, and waste it is harmful to natural habitats, creatures, and the environment.”

I feel that this is a good topic for me for several reasons. First is that I have a direct investment in drilling operations. I currently work for an exploratory drill bit manufacturer in Murray, UT. I have a slightly more privileged view of the inner workings of the natural gas and oil exploration industry. I am personally curious about this topic.

Also, by virtue of my job, I have access to rig location maps and specialized trade magazines. These things allow me to more accurately and more conveniently assess the realities of modern drilling techniques. Although some of these materials are proprietary and cannot ethically be used or cited in my research paper, I can still gain insight by comparisons of materials, i.e. market expansion, new directions, shifts in trends.

I feel that this fits well with this assignment as well. The best argument for a good fit for this assignment is that it fits well with the outlined specifications; namely: be about the environment. I feel that I will be able to find enough published information about this topic while keeping my topic specific and interesting. I do believe that I can produce a concise essay of 10 pages or more from the materials that are available to me.

Also, I understand that there is an opportunity, if I do well, to have my work once again published. As I understand it, BYU’s environment department is looking for interesting articles for their compiled publication Borrowed Earth. If I feel that my paper topic is relevant and powerful, I will likely submit my work to be considered for publication. Thus, this assignment will have given me the drive and initiative to try to get published in a reputable work. The satisfaction and fulfillment that would come from such an accomplishment may urge me to seek occasion to publish myself again and again throughout my life.
christa hendrickshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03414101502821958763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6015054100995784456.post-69555836077653149312008-03-09T16:08:00.002-07:002008-03-09T16:10:58.235-07:00500 Interesting Words
As I become more acquainted with the world the one thing that interests me most is always changing. Or does it?

I my estimation, it is important to be able to effectively analyze any important argument we are faced with. At many time in our lives we will be making major decisions based on some argument. It would be nice to be able to tell if there are holes in a seemingly sound topic. For example, when electing a president (of any kind) it becomes pertinent to know and understand some techniques that may be used to fool you.

Other cases many not be so serious, but still offer advantages to the well prepared audience. Just recently, my wife and I attended a sales meeting; allured by a nice "free gift." The salesman was smooth and brought up many good points as to why we ought to buy his product. I could not argue with much of his logic accept one piece. He asserted over and over that if I did not act now, the opportunity would NEVER come my way again. Well, I have done sales myself and recognize the tactic and know that this man would rather have a future sale with us than no sale at all. The point is even basest understanding of rhetoric can elevate us from the bond of ignorance to evaluative genious.christa hendrickshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03414101502821958763noreply@blogger.com0
